Morwell
Morwell is located 148km east of Melbourne on the Princes Highway
in the heart of Victoria's power generating centre, the Latrobe
Valley. Founded in 1861 Morwell was originally known as Maryvale
until 1888 when the town was renamed as Morwell. The Morwell area
was a grazing run until a prospector discovered brown coal in 1873
and by 1889 the Great Morwell Coal mining Company had set up a coal
mine and briquette plant that only remained running until 1894.
In 1916 an open cut coal mine opened in the Morwell area and supplied
brown coal to a briquette factory which opened in Morwell in the
early 1920's and also to the Yallourn power station (Victoria's
first permanent power station) which was completed in 1924, from
that point on the Morwell and Latrobe Valley area began to build
as Victoria's power generating centre. Later on the Morwell power
station was completed in 1962, then followed the Hazelwood power
station just to the south of Morwell (Completed 1971), Followed
by Yallourn W power station and the Jeeralang gas turbine power
station (Burns natural gas and can supply 465 megawatts of power
to the electricity grid in less than 20 minutes) was built 1971,
then the Massive Loy yang power station (A 1984. B 1996) just south
of Traralgon. In fact from The Ridge in Morwell (Follow Signs to
"Power Works") you can see all of the area's power stations
from the one place, albeit from a distance. Below are pictures taken around Morwell as well as a couple
of special places in the Morwell area. |
